The 76ers Future Looks Pretty Bright

Somewhere, Sam Hinkie is grinning ever so slightly. Lady Luck finally looked favorably upon the Sixers at the NBA Draft Lottery on Tuesday evening in New York City, and suddenly the organization’s immediate outlook looks a whole lot brighter.

The Sixers, represented by beleaguered Head Coach Brett Brown, were awarded the first overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, and thus they will finally get their pick of the litter. The pick represents the team's first top overall selection since 1996 - when it used the first pick in the deep draft to select first-ballot Hall-of-Famer Allen Iverson - and third ever.

Draft Day Will Be Busy for 76ers

June 23rd will be a busy day for the Philadelphia 76ers and new GM Bryan Colangelo. The team will have three – or four, depending on how the ping pong balls bounce – first round picks in the hyped 2016 NBA Draft, as well as an arsenal of cap space and attractive young assets with which to leverage in the name of imminent improvement. What transpires on draft night will go a long way toward shaping the immediate future of the franchise.

During Sam Hinkie's tumultuous tenure with the team, the Sixers stacked picks and young players laden with potential in order to develop a wide talent base with which to build. Without pressure to contend immediately, asset acquisition was the main objective, and Hinkie proved deft at the task. Now with a new regime in tow with a mandated emphasis on improvement, it seems as though the Sixers may be ready to act on some of those acquired assets by flipping them for tangible talent that could contribute to a rapid about-face.

76ers Due for Some Lottery Luck

Luck is a central aspect of success in the NBA. Talent, coaching, and chemistry are all extremely important, but luck is equally integral. No title team gets there without catching a few breaks somewhere along the way. Securing a superstar via the bouncing of ping-pong balls, avoiding injury, favorable matchups; all predicated on luck.

The Sixers are heading into a monumental summer in terms of the franchise's future, and after whiffing on a top two pick in each of the past two drafts - despite the obvious and best efforts of much maligned former General Manager Sam Hinkie - the Sixers are due for some of that ever important luck in the upcoming draft lottery.

San Antonio a Potential Destination for Kevin Durant?

When asked about the San Antonio Spurs string of success over the past two decades, Kevin Durant came off as a player who pined for the kind of coaching consistency and excellence that the Spurs have enjoyed during that span.

“Having a very good coach is probably the most important thing in this league,” Durant stated at a recent shoot around.

That’s what they have,” he continued, alluding of course to Gregg Popovich. “No matter how many moving parts they have on the team, he always stays consistent with what he does.”

Durant stressed that it takes more than on-court talent to succeed in the NBA, something he has learned the hard way paired next to fellow All-Star Russell Westbrook on the Thunder.

“You can have all the great players you want, but you have to have somebody to orchestrate it. [The Spurs] have great players, but they also have a great coach to put them in positions that utilizes all their strengths as individuals.”

These comments, which don’t necessarily sound like a ringing endorsement for current Thunder coach Billy Donovan, come at an interesting time, as Durant is set to hit the market as a free agent this summer. Virtually every team will be a suitor, and Durant’s obvious affinity for Popovich will undoubtedly cause some to wonder if there’s potential for a union between the two. It seems like a long-shot, but nothing can be ruled out at this point.
